Tree Pruning
Pruning is about the tree itself. We take off dead, damaged, crossing and weak branches so the tree stays healthier and stronger for years to come. We prune for homes and businesses and pick each cut with the tree's natural shape in mind.
Deadwooding
Dead branches do not heal and they get more brittle every year. They break off in wind and snow and can land on cars, decks and people. Taking out the dead wood is often the single most useful thing you can do for a mature tree.
Thinning
A crowded crown catches wind like a sail and keeps light and air from getting inside the tree. Thinning takes out select branches so wind moves through the tree and the remaining limbs grow stronger. Done right, you can hardly tell the tree was touched.
Structure and shape
Branches that cross and rub wear through the bark. Tight forks can split as the tree grows. Pruning these early, especially on younger trees, helps the tree build a strong frame and keeps it in good shape as it gets bigger.

In New Jersey
Common New Jersey yard trees
Oaks, maples and other shade trees fill yards across northern New Jersey. Many of them were planted decades ago and now carry heavy limbs over houses and driveways. Regular pruning keeps the dead wood out and the weight balanced, which helps these trees ride out storms.
Ash trees
The emerald ash borer has spread through New Jersey and kills ash trees within a few years. Pruning will not save an infested ash. If you have ash trees, ask us to look at them during your estimate so you know where they stand.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
- When should I prune my trees?
- It depends on the kind of tree. Dead and dangerous branches can come off any time of year. Many trees are easier to read in late fall and winter when the leaves are down, because you can see every branch. Call us and we will tell you what makes sense for your trees.
- How often should trees be pruned?
- There is no single answer. Young trees benefit from light pruning every few years while they build their shape. Mature trees often need attention when dead wood builds up or after a big storm. At your estimate we can tell you what your trees need now.
- Will pruning hurt my tree?
- Good pruning helps a tree. Problems come from taking too much at once or cutting in the wrong place, like topping or leaving stubs. We cut back to the right spot on each branch and take only what the tree can handle.
- What is deadwooding?
- Deadwooding means removing the dead branches from a tree. Dead limbs are brittle and can fall without warning, especially in wind or snow. Removing them makes the tree safer and keeps it looking healthy.
- Is pruning the same as trimming?
- They overlap. Pruning focuses on the health and structure of the tree. Trimming focuses on cutting back growth to clear your roof, driveway or yard. If your main worry is clearance, see our tree trimming page. Either way, we tell you exactly what we plan to cut.
